The botanical name Chelone is derived from the ancient Greek word for “tortoise” and from the English common name (Turtlehead), you may gather that the white flowers of this charming plant resemble the upturned faces of open-mouthed baby turtles! This selection of a favorite wetland perennial wildflower boasts white blossoms amid leathery dark green leaves in late summer. The species is naturally found in moist woodlands and swampy areas, making turtlehead a great choice for shady woodlands, native plant gardens, bogs or pond edges, and children's gardens or naturalized borders where they won't dry out.
